PAPER FOR PUBLISHING






Once we are confident with our graphic design of the book and had no further corrections, then the next step is to create a master and paper shopping with qualifications such as in the production data. For that we need to know which store provides the paper in accordance with what we need, what size, and a shop where the most inexpensive price.

Before we decide to buy the paper we better ask for consultation with the offset machine operator. We should show him a montage. It is  the results of which will be used as a master or print reference. The operator will tell us how the paper dimension should we cut to the dimensions of the offset machine. Fatal consequences if we are wrong in choosing the type of paper and how to treat it.

A. Types of Paper

There are an assortment of paper, among them are:

1. HVS

HVS is smooth and does not absorb paper when printed or written. This paper is great for photocopy and for printed into letterheads, books, magazines, forms, brochures etc. The color other than white, there are yellow, red and blue. Thickness ranging from 50 grams, 60 grams, 70 grams, 80 grams, 100 grams. HVS is nothing artificial Padalarang, Martapura, Leces, Banyuwangi, Japan etc. Sheet size :  Plano 100 cm x 65 cm and 79 x 109 cm. Of this size could be cut: 10 sheet sizes kwarto and 9 folio size sheets.

2. Cardboard paper

Each paper weighing more than 170 g / m2 called carton of any type and brand. Paperboard usually required for making invitations, cover books and magazines, various kinds of cards, brochures, various boxes, folio folders, posters and others. No layered cardboard (coated) and there are not layered. There are two surface-coated and there is only one face. No cardboard surface is flat and there are embosed be bumpy, eg. linen paper, Hammer, Conque-ror and others. Embose cartons are commonly used to make invitations and cards. Commonly used for book covers Art carton (layer two faces) and Ivory (layer of the face).

3. NCR Paper

This paper type is usually used to print receipts, invoices, forms, blank and other products which, when written directly copied in several pieces in layers underneath without having to use carbon paper. The top layer is usually called Top. Bottom-most layer called bottom. One or two or three layers between Top and Bottom called the midle. The arrangement between Top and Bottom Midle should not be reversed. Therefore, before it is printed or bound in advance should be checked and marked in advance with

4. Newsprint (CD)

Available only plano Size 100 x 65 cm.  It is not as white as HVS paper color. Its surface is a bit rough. The price is much cheaper than HVS. Usually used to print the contents of books, tabloids, magazines or newspapers.


5.  BC. (Briefcard) 

This cardboard commonly used to craft school children. It is usually made to folio folder, simple book cover, various cards and others. Smooth surface of these papers. The color assortment. Thickness is commonly used 160 g, 220 g and 250 g. BC plano carton size: 61 x 86 cm.

6. Art Paper

The paper surface is slick and smooth. Usually used for printing brochures, magazines, book covers. Thickness ranging from 85 g, 100 g, 115 g, 120 g and 150 g. Plano Art Paper size: 65 x 100cm and 79 x 109cm

7. Art Carton

Art paper thickness above 170 gr called Art Carton Normally used to print business cards, book covers, brochures, paperbag, folders and so forth. Thickness ranging 190 gr, 210gr, 230 gr, 260 gr, 310 gr, 350 gr, 400 gr. Plano size equal to the Art Paper: 65 x 100cm and 79 x 109cm

8. Ivory

Ivory Cardboard Carton glance similar to Art carton. The difference ivory only one side slippery. The other side because it is not in coating. Thickness of 210 g, 230 g, 250 g, 310 g, up to 400 gr. Because, for the Ivory thickness often used as material for a paper bag, dos cosmetics, exclusive maps, book covers and others. Plano Size: 65 x 100cm and 79 x 109 cm.

9. Duplex

Duplex cardboard normally used in the manufacture dos rice and cakes, perfumes and medicines. Cardboard duplex at a glance like ivory. Its surface is white and vice versa gray. For a box of donuts usually laminated first for slick and luxurious. Thickness ranging from 250 g, 270 g, 310 g, 350 g, 400 g, 450 g, 500 g. Plano Size: 79 x 109 cm.

10. Yellow Board

For binding memorandum and receipts and for hard cover volumes typically used this type. Its type is too stiff and too heavy that it can not be printed using offset machines. To state the thickness used the term YB 30 and YB 40.

11. Fancy Paper

Printed materials for the luxury, such as letterhead, business cards and invitations, widely used type of paper. Its brands include Conqueror, millennium, jasmine, java emboss, Hawaii and others. Thickness ranging from 80 g, 100 g, 220 g, up to 300 gr.

12. Corugoated

The boxes are generally made of this  type of paper. This paper can not be printed by the offset machine. If you want to make a cardboard with a picture then it must be printed or coated with paper that can be offset size is no plano and there are already cut.

13. Doorslag

This paper sheet is generally used as a coupling to the memorandum, receipt, or forms that each disk set consists of several pieces of coupling. This occurs when the paper NCR is not widely known as it is now. This is possible because doorslag paper so thin that when inserted three or four carbon paper in each disk set in the memorandum stuffing writing can still be translucent or printed until the last sheet in each set were coated carbon paper. 14. Samson Kraft

This paper wrappers known as the most popular. The color is light brown clean and smooth and strong, not easily torn when worn wrapping heavy goods such as printed materials. This paper is also used for materials paperbag, envelopes and cover notes and receipts. Thickness available 70gr and 80 gr. Planonya size is: 90 x 120cm and 79 x 109 cm.

15. Cardboard Bufallo

Many hard cover for the magazine collection, notary deed, theses, papers and other uses of this type of carton. The paper is robust, dense, smooth and colors vary. No emboss surface and some are not. Plano Size: 79 x 109 cm.

B. The Size of Finished Paper

The size of the finished paper is cut and packaged in units of ordinary Rim (500 sheets) in the international predetermined standard by ISO (International Standard Organization), namely:

A0 = 841 x 1189 mm
A1 = 549 x 841 mm
A2 = 420 x 594 mm
A3 = 297 x 420 mm
A4 = 210 x 297 mm
A5 = 148 x 210 mm
A6 = 105 x 148 mm
A7 = 74 x 105 mm
A8 = 52 x 74 mm

B0 = 1000 x 1414 mm
B1 = 707 x 1000 mm
B2 = 500 x 707 mm
B3 = 353 x 500 mm
B4 = 210 x 297 mm
B5 = 148 x 210 mm
B6 = 125 x 420 mm
B7 = 88 x 125 mm
B8 = 62 x 88 mm

Size is more commonly used in the community and in the printing world today are the following sizes:
1/2 kwarto = 140 x 215 mm      Folio    = 215 x 330 mm
Kwarto    = 215 x 280 mm    Doubel Folio  = 330 x 430 mm
1/2 Folio  = 165 x 215 mm     Plano    = 650 x 1000 mm
